About the Artwork
This Snake & Sunflower artwork is on a tin glazed earthenware dish featuring a symmetrical design of four yellow sunflowers. With relief stamens they are intertwined with two green snakes with their spots and stripes also in relief.
Sunflowers were popularised in the late 19th century when fashionable figures in the art and literary world favoured the sunflower as one of their main design motifs, believing this flower to signify lasting happiness and adoration; key principles of aestheticism.

De Morgan included many snakes in his artworks, perhaps because the Victorians regarded snakes to represent wisdom and eternity.
