About the Artwork
Scarlet macaws and blue fronted Amazon parrots sit amongst stylised leaves and grape vines. The natural world was De Morgan’s inspiration, structured in repeating patterns and geometry, his anthropomorphic wildlife depicted as a moment in time.

Affectionately known as his ‘Parrot Tile Panel’, produced in the new Sands End factory. With its larger kilns, it enabled larger artworks to be produced such as the commissioned tile interiors to adorn the dining rooms and smoking rooms of their luxury cruise client, Peninsular & Oriental (P&O). The Parrot Tile Panels were designed to repeat over 16 tiles so that entire rooms could be covered.
This artwork shows the newer technique; no longer painting and firing each tile individually but instead to mount and fire the tiles collectively. The team first traced a master copy of the design onto light-weight tracing paper, then painted the glaze on top of the drawing which was then placed face down onto slip-coated tiles, coated with glaze and sodium silicate before finally kiln firing at 1100degrees.
The heat of the kiln caused the tracing paper to turn into fine ash, which was easily absorbed in the glaze. Looking closely at the tile panel, the tracing papers join-line can be seen.
