About the Artwork
The Resurrection Fern (which we have identified in this design) is a symbol of resilience and joy.

This plant gets nutrients from the air and water. It can lose up to 97% of its water in dry weather and then the fronds curl up and turn brown. Seemingly dead but only until the next rain; within 48hours, fronds turn green and spring back to life. Native to the USA, sub-tropical Southern America and parts of South Africa, as well as our very own UK.

De Morgan was well known for his ceramic “Chargers” and this painting was applied to an earthenware dish (approx. 362mm diameter) adorned with this diagonal leaf pattern, in red and white, dotted with small pink flowers on a dark gold ground.

His surface treatment of lustre-glazed earthenware is captured in the soft sheen of this carefully chosen mulberry silk.
