About the Artwork
This Winged Butterfly is drawn from the wing of the butterfly shown in the tile “Leaf & Berry”. The earthenware tile was painted in 1888: this tile (151 x 152 x 10mm) is decorated with yellow berries and green leaves on an under glazed. Part of butterfly on edge suggests this is part of a tile panel.

Fluttering through the tile foliage, we may wish to follow this little butterfly and see where it goes next. The butterfly is a popular motif in the visual and literary arts with the Smithsonian Institute reporting that “butterflies are certainly one of the most appealing creatures in nature”.
We dedicate this tiny being to the Sinai Baton Blue Mount Butterfly: the world’s smallest at just the size of a thumbnail, found only in the heights of Mount Sinai, Egypt. Survival is at risk from any disturbance to habitat.
Egypt was a key source of inspiration to De Morgan and butterflies. In mythology, the butterfly refers to the human soul. As a species endemic to Egypt, it is an emblem for conservation issues in the country.
According to the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation in Bonn, at least 60 butterfly species are extinct with 494 facing imminent extinction.
