About the Artwork
One of the animals depicted on the selection of 6″ ruby lustre tiles which includes sits alongside a bird and fish, wild boar, bird with nut, lynx and griffin. It is almost as if the Pegasus had wandered off this tile set is set in a bespoke copper frame. Dated within the period 1872 – 1907, this tin glazed earthenware panel of 6 creatures, measures width 940 mm, Height 170 mm, Depth 28 mm.
We attribute this Being to Greece, where the Pegasus is usually depicted as a white stallion. Sired by Poseidon, born out of the neck of snake haired Medusa once she was slain, Pegasus is the creator of Hippocrene, the fountain on Mount Helicon. According to early myths, everywhere the winged horse struck his hoof to the earth, a water spring burst forth.
Long honoured also as a constellation Pegasus is a subject of very rich iconography, especially through ancient Greek pottery as well as paintings and sculptures of the Renaissance. Linked to the myth of bringing forth water, Pegasus is an important story in the works of De Morgan and this heritage collection.
