About the Artwork
Drawn from De Morgan’s Lustre Tazza with Antelope and Leaves c. 1888-1907.
DM is Halsey Ricardo, ‘HR’

This dark red fawn is against pink leaves with a pattern of small spirals round the rim. The outside of the bowl is banded with various leaf patterns.

Halsey Ricardo was an Arts and Crafts architect, who was recognised as being highly original, sensitive to the Arts movement and addressing the issues of the modern day.

Like De Morgan, Ricardo advocated the use of impervious glazed materials to resist the polluted atmosphere of nineteenth century London. The meeting of minds resulted in the newly established De Morgan & Co. and they became attractive partners for those seeking to place commissions of larger scale tile work for both exterior and interior ceramics.

The partnership saw De Morgan’s work transition from singular pieces to multiple piece productions using new technologies such as “transfer” printing. They built much larger ceramic kilns to create a more efficient production method than hand painting each piece.

Despite these larger pieces, they still designed smaller size pottery including tiles and vases such as this one, the Tazza.

Various antelopes are on the IUCN Red List (International Union for the Conservation of Nature).
