About the Artwork
This Peacock (and other versions), features on several plates and chargers in very fine detail. This depiction is from 1872, Ceramic, Dish, and Lustre-glazed, earthenware.

Decorated on this charger, dia368mm, with his tail stunningly following the inner circumference of the plate.

Translated as Mayura in Sanskrit, the peacock has enjoyed a fabled place in their native India. It is frequently depicted in temple art, mythology, poetry, folk music, and traditions. It is one of the sacred birds of the Hindu culture and scriptures and is associated with many goddesses such as Lakshmi, a goddess known for patience and kindness.

Peacocks are symbols of beauty, grace, and pride and is the national bird of India. Today they continue to roam freely in many parks across the world whilst until recently, they wandered across Halsey Ricardo’s own garden at Woodside, (the house he designed for his family in Grafham, Petworth, 1905). The collected fallen feathers contrasted well against the De Morgan tiled fireplaces.
