About the Artwork
The Lion Rampant refers to the profile attitude of this Lion. William De Morgan’s beast is spread across a mural of 42 glazed tiles. Over his career, he drew hundreds of animals, each with their own anthropomorphic sensibilities. This Lioness with the sun ray behind her head is a true symbol of strength and guardianship.
William De Morgan (1839 – 1917), was the leading ceramicist of the Arts and Crafts movement (c. 1870 – 1910). A trained fine artist, he began his career by creating stained glass panels, before moving onto ceramics; in particular, hearth place tiles, murals, and “hollowware”.
This picture panel of forty-two tiles decorated the Lion in turquoise and cobalt, setting the creature against blue, green and yellow patterns on a white ground.
Designed by Halsey Ricardo (Fulham period).
Currently on display at the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow E17.
