About the Artwork
Drawn from the original source, SS India c. 1888-1897

This 9-inch tile with scrolling flower pattern (segment of a larger frieze) was produced in the newly built Sand's End Pottery, Fulham. It was designed for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company liner S.S. India and demonstrates the success of De Morgan & Co. progression to large scale interiors contracts. The two men were reportedly the best of friends, complementing each other’s skills in this new partnership phase.

A 152m length ship, the SS India was a steam passenger liner hosting around 475 guests and operated between 1896 and 1915. The cruise liners saw the benefit of ceramic wall coverings; easy to keep clean and long lasting.

SS India was the first of five sister ships and was the largest ship of the fleet at the time. Built by Caird & Company of Greenock, she was launched on 15 April 1896 sailing for almost 20years on the route between Britain, India and Australia. It was then commandeered as an armed merchant cruiser in WW1. It now sadly lies at the bottom of the sea, just north of the Arctic Circle near Bodo, Norway.
