About the Artwork
The Golden Seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) is an endangered species due to over-fishing, water pollution and, in Europe, Mediterranean water temperatures rising above the 16-27degrees Celsius is causing habitat destruction. Aquariums in Genoa, Italy and in Valencia, Spain, are especially committed to breeding seahorses to increase the native population.
The only creature in the world that sees the male give a live birth, carrying up to 100 infants at a time, measuring at around 10mm each. These creatures are shy, changing colour and texture to blend into their environment.
In Greek and Roman mythology, the Sea horse is a symbol of Power associated with Poseidon and Neptune whilst in European mythology, they are believed to guide the souls of those who lost their lives at sea, helping them reach the underworld and protecting them until they found peace.
In all, a perfect creature for De Morgan to depict in his artworks.
De Morgan did not produce their own blanks, instead he bought in blank plates and tiles from suppliers such as Wedgwood, the Morgan Crucible Company in Battersea, Poole Pottery and J H Davies.
Golden Seahorse design is protected by UK Design Registration No. 6355862.
