Sustainability and byLegacy

Our business received support from https://betterfutures.london  as part of the review of our approach to global supply chain planning.

byLegacy® is a luxury brand, creating statement and valuable pieces to generate licensed revenue for the De Morgan Foundation whilst sharing stories from the Archive.

The brand objective is to raise awareness and sharing the stories about De Morgan works whilst simultaneously raising awareness about endangerment. Our choice of the De Morgan artworks plays two important roles; highlighting the plight of endangered species and showcasing the artisanal crafts and skills of yesteryear and how they relate to contemporary practices.

The key challenge of creating byLegacy® luxury consumer pieces, was to stay true to the historic De Morgan socialist values. Designs are copyrighted to protect the artist and the license fee that is revenue raised to support the ongoing work of the De Morgan (charitable) Foundation and other Charities where appropriate.

byLegacy® connects audiences with

  1. Artisanal design development approaches in a contemporary age
  2. Developments in modern technologies, such a two-sided printing on silk using chemical free solutions such as printing with vegetable inks.
  3. Software and Processes to evidence and record the reduction of resource, GHG and carbon use.
  4. The Circularity of Resources including purification in production
  5. The transparency and traceability of materials such as pure and recycled gold, where it comes from and how it is gotten.
  6. How such production choices affect the land and biodiversity within it
  7. How the movement of these goods are understood locally, the role they play in representing both the history of the artisanal crafts and the endangered species they represent for future decision making.

We operate with

Purpose: Archive Publishing, Learning and Sharing and communicating the ESG values through

Design Values: Simplicity, Utility and Beauty

Endangered Species Thinking: Land, Sea and Air

byLegacy® is engaged with partner organisations to connect with their audiences about the loss of biodiversity and to champion artisanal arts. The approach is to use storytelling and courses on topics such as craft skills, endangerment, and the re-introduction of species to habitats e.g. the dodo genome sequencing in California.

Identified People & Place community skills engagement partners include:

  • Primary schools (the exploration of flora and fauna)
  • Secondary schools (supply chain management of design production and challenges to stay authentic to Vision and Purpose)
  • Artistic organisations such as galleries for learning around both above topics

The brand is committed to engaging the skills of people who are committed to the values of ESG, People and Place and who are  commercial in their approach

Products and Materials

byLegacy® produce the following key product lines:

  • 100% printed mulberry silk clothing articles to make head scarves, lounge pants/shorts/tops, Cushion covers, silk sourced from China and Italy.
  • Jewellery pieces using recycled content to make earrings, rings, necklaces and animal pendants manufactured in the UK, China and India.
  • Gift Accessories produced in UK and Europe including Room Misters, Natural Wax Soaps & Candles, Lampshades, Bone China Mugs, Trays and Wallpapers

Our Approach to Packaging

  1. Mono Material (for easier recycling)
  2. Packaging of the smallest size possible; reusability of product for packaging where possible
  3. Plastic Free
  4. Certified Production
  5. Petroleum free glues and inks
  6. Naturally Degradable

For carbon reduction and minimal frustration to recycling, our packaging centres on the mono-material approach; paper based with no plastics (except for our luxury packaging for our gold jewellery; this contains some plastics in the casing and material fibres and designed to be long lasting). It is designed to be least labour intensive on the packing houses, to ensure reworks and logistics are kept to a minimum.

byLegacy® investigates their supply chain to favouring partners who are powered by hydro and wind power, operating with a closed loop water collection and purification system, printing with vegetable inks.

Evidencing, reporting and certifying sustainability is a requirement Europe but in the Far East, there is still some resistance; operations are often family run, acting as lifelines for small, rural communities and whilst sustainable in their approach, is not always so easy to certify. Therefore, we only work with organisations who can supply ESG certifications such as using Green Energy, Chlorine Free and certifications in alignment with global ESG expectations such as ECO-Tex certification.

The Mulberry raw silk comes from Huzhou, which is a specialist area in China for Mulberry silk production and heavily regulated. As part of the primary school curriculum, it is a recognised part of education to nurture and maintain the lifecycle of the silkworm. Mulberry silk is chosen because it has an ultra-smooth surface which is suitable for digitally printing art and with a slight reflective sheen, it is consistent with the lustre glazing of De Morgan’s original ceramic tiles. It is a strong and durable material but also a natural harvested material which if it ends up in the ground or at sea, it will break down naturally (as opposed to polymix fabrics). It requires minimal printing using vegetable inks (although the fix is chemical based) whilst still achieving the strong colour.

byLegacy® choses factories with ECO-Tex certification, certified water management systems, and supply chain transparency.

In the UK, we contract suppliers for our jacquard woven silk, but the thread comes from China. For our UK printed eco-silks and velvets (made of recycled plastic bottles), the raw materials are imported from China.
